Frater chronicles the development of the first institute of design education for traditional artisans in her new book, Artisans by Design.  She will present images from the journey and read excerpts from the book.  All items shown are natural fibers- cotton, wool and silk, lovingly hand woven, block printed, resist dyed and embroidered by artisan designers of Kutch.

Judy Frater, founder of Textiles Live, lived and worked in Kutch, a desert region of western India, for 30 years. She began the first design school for traditional artisans. She is author of Artisans by Design, Threads of Identity and The Art of the Dyer in Kutch. Before living in India she was Associate Curator of The Textile Museum. The textiles shown are all designed and created by the uniquely creative artisan graduates of the education programs Judy launched.
