VOLUNTEER AT LOCAL CLOTH

Local Cloth is a volunteer-led and -supported non-profit organization. There are multiple opportunities to volunteer, from serving on committees that keep us running behind the scenes to planning events and completing retail shifts in our Local Cloth shop. Some are one-off and shorter-term commitments, while others are long-term.

SPECIAL EVENTS

FiberFest  |  April 22 and 23, 2023

Help Local Cloth during the 11th annual FiberFest at the WNC Farmers Market. Opportunities to serve include 1) vendor booth sitters (3-hour shift to sit at booths for vendors so they can shop and take breaks); 2) Local Cloth booth sitters (3-hour shift to sit at the Local Cloth booth and share information); 3) load in/load out helpers on Saturday and Sunday morning from 7am - 8:30am and 5pm - 6:30pm (help vendors load in and load out their booths); and 4) demonstrations and make & takes (bring materials to provide spinning, carding, weaving, or plan a make & take for festival participants).

Cowee Valley Quilt & Fiber Celebration  |  May 5 and 6, 2023

Support Local Cloth at the Cowee Valley Quilt and Fiber Celebration in Franklin, North Carolina. Opportunities include: 1) Local Cloth booth sitters (sit at the Local Cloth booth and share information); and 2) Fiber farmers (need one farmer to bring 1 - 2 farm animals on Saturday, May 6).

Worldwide Knit in Public Day Volunteers  |  June 10, 2023

These positions support Local Cloth's involvement in the one day worldwide celebration of knitting. The 2023 event will take place on June 10, 2023. Opportunities to serve include "yarn bombing" trees; knitting in public places around Asheville's River Arts District; and teaching how to knit a basic pattern during a 2-hour shift.

Anything Fiber Sale Manager and Co-Manager  |  July 29, 2023

These positions support the annual Anything Fiber Sale. The 2023 event is July 29, 2023. The Manager helps plan and coordinate the event as well as the managing the store during the sale. The Co-Manager coordinates with vendors. Both positions will need to help with setup and operations on the day-of and during the event.

Pop-up Artisan Market Organizer

This position leads Local Cloth's anchor pop-up artisan markets, the Holiday Market in December and Spring Fibershed Market in April. Expectations include planning and organizing the events; coordinating with vendors; and providing operational support. Orientation and training are provided.

Special Events Volunteers

Local Cloth hosts between 4 and 6 events each year. This volunteer will support the planning, organization and operation of one or more events, based upon interest and availability, including assisting with day-of setup, tear down and general event needs.

COMMITTEES


Workshop Committee Member

This volunteer position supports the work of a key Local Cloth pillar: workshops. Expectations include attending one meeting per month; monitoring class registrations and communicating with teachers and students as needed; and helping with setup and clean up.

Shop Volunteers and Retail Committee Member

These volunteer positions supports the Local Cloth shop, which sells local fiber farm products as well as work from local fiber artists. Shop volunteers serve a three hour shift 1 to 2 times per month. Retail committee members meet once per month; communicate with and recruit new vendors; and support retail operations.

Marketing Committee Member

This volunteer position helps Local Cloth tell our story. Expectations include attending one meeting per month; setting the vision for and supporting the overall marketing strategy, ensuring that marketing activities are in alignment with the strategic plan and needs of Local Cloth.

Membership/Volunteer Committee Member

This volunteer position focuses on helping us grow while nurturing existing members. Expectations include greeting new members and community groups; engaging and matching current members with organizational opportunities; and planning new member orientations and organizational events.
