In this single session we will introduce the basic elements of needle felting, different types of wool and techniques for application using landscape photos for inspiration. A simple technique, needle felting is a dry method of creating non-woven fabric by interlocking wisps of dyed wool fiber using a barbed needle. The organic textures and impressionistic colors of blended wool offer a very painterly approach to textiles, especially suited to landscape imagery. All levels are welcome in this class, anyone from a hobbyist with a short attention span to a professional artist can have fun and be impressed with themselves as we learn to “build” the landscape from background and shadow to the highlights of the surface. All necessary materials are provided with the $40 material fee, due in class. These include a kit for each student with a collection of dyed wool roving in the landscape palette, felting needles, acrylic felt pinned to a foam block and printed materials outlining tools, fibers and resources. Additionally, each student will have use of an adjustable Ott light to mimic natural daylight for best color accuracy and clarity while working and multi-needle blending tools.
