Dyer’s Chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria) is the subject of this month’s Natural Dye Study group. It is a productive perennial plant that grows well in our area. The flowers produce a warm yellow color which comes from the flavonoids in the plant. As with all flavonoid based dyes, they work better on protein fiber (wool and silk) than cellulose fiber (cotton or linen). If you have some growing in your garden please bring some in to add to the dye pot, we will have some thanks to Rebecca Wallace and the Black Mountain Dye Garden.
The plant is said to have various medicinal uses and can be made into a tea, ground into a poultice or used in the bath. Please do some research on this to share with the group.
As usual we will have pre-mordanted samples for your records. If you want to dye another small item make sure you mordant it beforehand.
Looking Forward to seeing you.
