We will knit a traditional, decorative stocking to hold small gifts from family and Santa, and self. This is a timeless, classic pattern for those wanting to continue, or start, a holiday tradition.
Pattern instruction, and support, for shorter versions and a matching 4" tall ornament are included in the pattern and class instruction. [The small ornament makes a nice, fast-to-knit, unique gift.] Students will have options in and after the class for future projects.
The pattern (featured in a book by the instructor) is for the December stocking featured in "The Sock Journal: Knit the Year in Socks" and can be seen online on Ravelry at link below:

These are knitted top-down and in-the-round. Knitters experienced with, and preferring to use, the "magic loop" method are welcome but it won't be taught in the class.
Level: Beginner/Intermediate (advanced beginner knitting skills required.)
Instructor: Catherine Wingate (Read Catherine's bio)
Members: $100
Non members: $120
Materials fee: No materials fee for this workshop
Materials Provided: The instructor will provide hard-copies of the pattern and some knitting notions for use in class (e.g., stitch markers, jotting pads, darning needles to sew toe closed, etc.) but students are also encouraged to bring their own favorites like preferred cable holders, etc.
Materials students should bring:
To knit the 14" stocking:
- approximately 320 yards of worsted weight yarn
- set of 5mm/US size 8 double pointed knitting needles
- set of 4.5mm/US size 7 double pointed knitting needles for the ribbing
- stitch and row markers (or scrap yarn, jump rings, large safety pins, paper clips, etc.), cable holders
Students who only want to knit the ornament, or knit it first, will need approximately 50 yards of fingering weight yarn and a set of 2.75mm/US size 2 double pointed knitting needles.
Note from instructor: The stocking shown in the Ravelry site photo used Heirloom Easy Care 12 (50g/72 yds). The yarn has since been discontinued but yarnsellers can easily recommend suitable substitutes. The stocking is not a fitted garment so achieving an exact gauge isn't critical. This is a "forgiving" pattern. It is designed to allow horizontal stretch without distortion when holding small gifts but also handsome if holding fewer items or as simply a decorative item.
