There is a component in the leaves of indigo that is crucial to the formation of indirubin pinks and purples. It is not mentioned in any dye book (neither is indirubin...) This indighost's real name is isatin, which is a yellow dye, a reducing agent, a discharge agent, and the best friend to those wanting purples from their indigo patch. Different indigo genera have different levels of this compound in their leaves. Japanese indigo has the least, followed by Indigofera species, and finally the most is found in Baphycanthus. We will work with silk, comparing fresh Japanese indigo leaves and dried pulverized Indigofera tinctoria leaves in a blender bath to extract purple, then repeat using the spent juice of previous baths to "push the purple".
