This class is part of our Learn a New Skill in the New Year This is a fun new dyeing method to make multi colored and patterned shirts, underwear and fabric. What makes this process especially interesting is that you can’t control the dyes. They move as the ice or snow melts, and split into their component colors as the temperatures change. We will first soak our fabric or garments in soda ash, and place a screen or grate inside a plastic tub so that it’s raised off the bottom. Then we’ll use a variety of techniques to crumple, fold or tie the fabric and place it on top of the screen. Next, we’ll pile a bunch of ice or snow on top and then sprinkle dry dye on top of everything. We’ll also try sprinkling the dye below the ice or snow to see how the results differ. Ice dyeing needs to soak for at least 24 hours, so we’ll all come back the next day to unwrap our pieces and share the results.
MATERIALS FEE : 5 dollars: soda ash, string for tying and several colors of dye.

What to bring/how to dress: one yard of fabric or several small garments, containers to hold your items while the ice melts, a small screen or rack that fits in the container, a cooler with a bag of ice (unless we have snow), tin foil, and plastic zip lock bags to take finished pieces home in
