Annual Meeting Part II: The Celebration (04 May 2026)

At the business side of our Annual Meeting in March, we took care of the votes and the paperwork. Now it's time for the fun part. Annual Meeting Part II is a relaxed, member-centered celebration — a chance to eat, laugh, win a raffle, and spend an evening with the community you've helped build.

Here's how the evening will flow:

4:30–5:15pm | Gathering + Potluck — Drop in, fill a plate, and settle in. Our Membership Committee will be on hand at the Cozy Corner to welcome new members and answer questions.
5:15pm | Welcome + First Raffle — Peggy and Gail will kick off the program and draw the first raffle ticket.
5:15–5:30pm | Meet Local Cloth — Courtney will share a quick tour of what we do, who we are, and what's ahead. Second raffle drawing follows.
Local Cloth Bingo! — A lighthearted way to meet more members. The first completed card wins a free class.
Closing — Gail closes us out, with a warm re-invitation to join the Waterline Project.

Please bring a dish to share if you're able. This event is open to all members!

GoFigure Figurative Art Interest Group (05 May 2026)

GoFigure Guild May meeting will be held May 5th, at 10:00 am, at Local Cloth. We will have a short business meeting, a demo on silicone molds by member Lesley Keeble, and a Show & Tell of member's work.

Guild members work in several different mediums creating art dolls – clay, fiber, cloth, etc. Skill levels are beginner to professional. Guild membership is not required for registration to this interest group.

Supplies participants should be bring:

No supplies are necessary. Participants are encouraged to learn from one another & encouraged to continue their individual journey crafting and appreciating the art of the doll. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their work for sharing with the group.

Skill level necessary for participants:

While step by step instruction for creating a piece of figurative art is not offered at meetings, all skill levels are welcome to share in discussions of work that is presented for Show & Tell. Future workshops and demonstrations will be available for learning purposes.

Climate Change Quilt Project

Tuesday, May 5th, 2026

Local Cloth

Come learn about & take part in the Climate Change Quilt Project — an initiative dedicated to sparking conversation and action on climate change, from the local to the national level.

This 2-hour workshop begins with an introduction to the project: its mission and origin story. From there, you'll have dedicated time to sew your own quilt square representing your love of nature, climate issues and solutions, or the resilience of community. At the end, you can choose to add your square to Asheville's large collaborative community quilt, or take your square home as inspiration to start your own!

This event is free to attend, but you must RSVP to claim your spot. A $3-$5 sliding scale materials fee is suggested, paid via cash the day of the event.

This workshop is recurring and repeats on the first Tuesday of every month, 5-7 PM, at rotating locations. No sewing experience is needed, and all materials are provided, though you're welcome to bring your own.

This is not a class - you should know how to stitch, crochet, knit, or practice your favorite fiber craft but we suspect you will learn something along the way. We have experienced fiber enthusiasts in our group, so you can count on getting and giving some advice.

Materials supplied by participants: Please bring whatever project/s you are working on, items for show and tell as well as yarn or fiber-y acquisitions and new project ideas. Bring your own supper or snack.

Dye Lab (07 May 2026)

Local Cloth Dye Lab is open from 1-4 for working on your own acid-dye projects. This is for advanced beginners and beyond. You must have attended a dye lab introduction session or have done some dyeing with acid dyes in the past. Bring your own pre-soaked protein fiber* - wool, mohair, alpaca or silk. Local Cloth has most of what you'll need for dyeing, although some personal items that you should bring are rubber gloves, mask, dish tub and specific dyes that you want to use. There are also donated dyes available for use. We use a variety of techniques and equipment - low water immersion, steaming, crockpot dyeing, etc. There is an experienced host - Beth Sellars should you need consultation in getting the result you want. Space is limited so please register!

*Acid dyes do not work on cotton, linen, bamboo or any plant fiber. We only work with Protein (animal) fibers during this Dye Lab.

If you dread warping your loom, you’re not alone. With training and practice, though, you can approach the process with confidence. In this class we’ll cover all aspects of warping a floor or table loom, both back to front [B2F] and front to back [F2B] as well as a bit on sectional warping and using a warping paddle. It also includes handy tips for avoiding mistakes, for choosing yarns and making the process easier in general.

Intro to Inkle Weaving (09 May 2026)

If you want to weave but don’t have space for a big loom, give inkle weaving a try. Inkle weaving is a form of warp faced weaving used to making bands of cloth for belts, bracelets, guitar straps, borders & edgings, trims, fringes, and even cords. This class covers how the color placement creates the pattern and what types of yarns to use. We will weave basic patterns, and see how the size and weight of the weft yarn affects the strap. The looms may be small, but you can do big things with them!

This gathering marks the beginning of something bigger. The Judi Jetson Charitable Fund, named in honor of Judi — our "Main Mama" and one of Local Cloth's founding forces — will help sustain our core programs and ensure that Local Cloth continues to serve this community long into the future. We're raising $15,000 to kick off this fund, and we invite you to help make it real.

Felt a Stack of Folk Art Style Birds (11 May 2026)

Needle Felting a bird in the Folk Art style. In this workshop we will make 2-3 small birds. The birds will be simple shapes and brightly colored, by your vision. The birds will be designed to be stacked as the example or maybe strung vertically on a cord. In the class you will probably have time to make 2 birds and you will take materials home to make 1-2 more birds. All materials to make the birds and some display options will be provided.

The color wheel cushion is as practical as it is eye-catching. Use it as a supportive prop for yoga or meditation, a comfortable floor cushion, or a bold decorative accent that adds handmade warmth to any space. Its sculptural shape and vibrant wedges turn simple knitting into functional art, making it a project that lives equally well in a studio, living room, or quiet corner for rest.

Made with 160g of DK yarn. 8 x10g for the front and 80g for the back. Bring your own yarn colors or choose from kits curated especially for this workshop.

Intergenerational Stitch Circle: Kids and Adults Crafting Together

Mix it up! Join a group where there’s no age expectations. Children will be accompanied by attentive parents. Adults are invited to join without children. Knit, crochet, sew, felt, weave, needle punch, mend, plan new projects…. Come sit in community while crafting whatever your little heart desires. Connect and make friends no matter your age.

In this class you will learn how to draw flowers, leaves, twigs and tendrils in pencil and ink. I will teach you how to create texture, contrast and composition using line and shading. Discover the speed, comfort, and fluid rhythm of Continental knitting in this comprehensive full-day beginner workshop. Whether you’re completely new to knitting or looking to switch from English (throwing) style, this class will guide you step-by-step through the fundamentals of efficient, ergonomic knitting.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course of six hands-on hours, you will learn:
How to comfortably tension yarn in your left hand
The Continental knit stitch (“picking” technique)
The Continental purl stitch

Garment Sewing Interest Group (17 May 2026)

Oh Sew Asheville, an Apparel Sewing Interest Group meets monthly and is an opportunity for garment sewing enthusiast to share projects, tips, techniques, fitting help, and camaraderie. The Interest Group will have rotating activities such as actual sewing where individuals can decide whether to bring a machine or hand-sew their own project, “sew-a-longs” where everyone makes the same item with support from the group, field trips to local or regional fabric shops, sewing book exchanges, pattern exchanges, and fabric exchanges. Individual members or special subject matter experts may conduct mini tutorials for the group involving fitting, embellishing, pattern drafting, upcycling; alterations, dyeing fabric, etc.

You are welcome to bring a snack for yourself or to share. The Apparel Sewing Interest Group meets on the third Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is free for Local Cloth members (and $5 for non-members).

Brief business meeting at 10:30, followed by scheduled presentation/demo and show and tell. People interested in our group are encouraged to come and see what we are about. First meeting is free. Visible Mending or Embellishment with Felting (22 May 2026)

Mend or embellish your clothing with felting!

In this class I’ll teach you how to needle felt a design on a garment, then wet felt it to strengthen the design and make it durable. We’ll start by needle felting with a barbed needle to tangle wool roving into the fabric of your garment until it’s completely flat on one side, then we’ll wet felt the design to tangle together the fluffy fibers on the inside, and further mat down the fibers on the outside. This reduces pilling and creates a long-lasting design.

You’ll have the option to use my washaway templates and create fruit designs: strawberry, lemon, avocado or apple, OR you can create your own design and experiment. I’ll have a variety of wool colours available to choose from.

This technique can be used to repair holes, cover up stains, or bring life to an old garment. Please bring a garment or fabric to felt on that is knit or woven, at least twice as thick as a t-shirt and can be hand washed. Wool sweaters are easiest to felt on, and other less grippy materials may take longer to integrate the wool into. Thinner materials such as t-shirts tend to get holes when felted with the sharp barbed needle, but if you don’t mind possible damage you can bring a thinner material as well. I will have a few sweaters available to purchase for $15 each at the class.

Materials provided by instructor: Wool, felting needles, felting pads, wash away stabilizer templates, garbage bags (to protect a surface when wet felting, and carry home a wet project in), soap.

Students should bring: A garment or fabric to felt on that is knit or woven is at least twice as thick as a t-shirt and can be hand washed will work. Wool sweaters are easiest to felt on, and other materials may take longer to integrate the wool into. Thinner materials such as t-shirts tend to get holes when felted with the sharp barbed needle, but if you don’t mind possible damage you can bring a thinner material as well. I will have a few sweaters available to purchase for $15 each at the class.

Start where it actually begins — with freshly shorn (dirty) wool.

In **Fleece to Fiber**, we begin with raw, unwashed fleece and walk step-by-step through the transformation into usable yarn. This is a hands-on, practical class designed to build real confidence working with wool in its natural state.

You won’t just hear about the process — you’ll do it.

We Begin With Cleaning

Each participant will receive**raw, unwashed wool** to practice

* Cleaning

* Washing/scouring techniques that clean without felting

* Proper temperature control and handling

* Drying methods

Spinning in the Grease

Before everything is perfectly washed and fluffy, we’ll explore **spinning in the grease**: This gives you a real understanding of fiber behavior at different stages.

Carding Clean Wool

You will also receive **cleaned wool** to practice:

* Opening and fluffing fiber aka picking & flicking

* Combing & Hand carding

You’ll feel the difference between raw, washed, and fully prepared fiber — which is the key to discovering what kind of yarn you want to create.

From Fiber to Usable Product

We’ll finish by drafting and spinning prepared fiber into yarn using:

* Drop spindle (great for beginners)

* Spinning wheel (bring your own)

What You’ll Leave With

* Hands-on experience cleaning raw fleece

* Practice spinning both in the grease and from fiber you prepare

* Carded wool ready for spinning

* Confidence to process those fleeces you've been eyeing on your own

Next Steps in Continental Knitting: Magic Loop Hat (30 May 2026)

This hands-on workshop introduces knitters to working in the round using the magic loop method while reinforcing Continental-style knitting. Students will knit a brim-up hat using a simple, structured pattern designed for skill-building and confidence. The class covers circular needle setup, magic loop mechanics, joining in the round, knitting and purling in the round, and crown shaping using the k2tog decrease, which is taught as part of the workshop. Emphasis is placed on managing tension, avoiding ladders, and reading a basic knitting pattern. Students will practice decreases on a small swatch before applying them to the hat.

This course is an ideal next step for students who have completed the Beginning Continental Knitting workshop, and it is also appropriate for knitters with equivalent experience. By the end of the workshop, students will understand how and when to use magic loop for small-circumference projects and will leave with a nearly completed or finished hat.

This class will take your knowledge of color theory, mixing color and working with color in your chosen field to the next level. Some experience working with color is preferred but not necessary. You should be familiar with the color wheel and basic color combinations. You will make a color journal of all the experiments and color trials worked on in class. Most will be painted in gouache but you will have fun completing them making fabric and fiber collages. Marble your Tannins (06 June 2026)

A tannin is almost always a prerequisite to mordanting cellulose for natural dyes. Besides immersion and block or screen printing, a new method is available to natural dyers. With immersion, only one tannin is used. With printing, several different tannins can be used at different concentrations in the same fabric, We will print tannins by marbling them, then mordant with an aluminum salt and go on to dye and/or treat in iron. Students should have some familiarity with natural dyeing on cellulose.

Mix it up! Join a group where there’s no age expectations. Children will be accompanied by attentive parents. Adults are invited to join without children. Coptic Book Binding (14 June 2026)

Learn this traditional multi-signature book which uses one of the oldest stitches in bookbinding called the Coptic Stitch. The spine is exposed showing the lovely regular stitches using pairs of needles. It is a simple and lovely way to bind a book. We will use a pad of mixed media paper which makes the preparation of the pages simple and quick. The finished book will be 6 X 4.5 inches. If you have some experience with hand sewing a book and you'd like to make a bigger book, please let me know. There will be a variety of eco-printed, marbled and paste papers for you to use or you can bring your own paper if you prefer.

Slip Into Mosaic Knitting — No Charts Required Create striking colorwork using simple slip-stitch techniques — one color at a time.

Ready to explore colorwork without juggling multiple strands or reading charts? In this workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of mosaic knitting while creating a cozy single-loop cowl. Mosaic knitting uses simple slip-stitch techniques to create bold, graphic patterns while working with only one color per round. This makes it an approachable and confidence-building introduction to colorwork.

During class, students will focus on:
understanding mosaic stitch structure
managing yarn tension for slipped stitches
reading and tracking written pattern repeats
recognizing and correcting common mistakes
developing a comfortable knitting rhythm in the round

By the end of class, students will have a strong foundation in mosaic knitting and the skills needed to confidently complete their cowl at home.

Skill Level - Advanced Beginner and beyond

Students should already be comfortable:

casting on joining to knit in the round working ribbing using either magic loop or a circular needle

Homework Requirement

To ensure we can spend our class time focused on mosaic techniques, students are required to arrive with the following completed:

yarn selected stitches cast on
work joined in the round
ribbing section completed

Students who need assistance with homework are encouraged to reach out prior to class

What Students Will Learn

how mosaic knitting creates colorwork using slip stitches
how to maintain even tension when slipping stitches
how to follow written mosaic instructions (no charts required)
how to troubleshoot common issues in mosaic knitting

This class focuses on written instructions rather than charts, making it an ideal next step for knitters who are comfortable knitting in the round and ready to explore colorwork in an approachable way.

Two Roots Alpacas Farm Tour Field Trip (20 June 2026)

Join us for a Local Cloth field trip to a farm in our fibershed! Two Roots Alpacas includes an alpaca ranch and a hobby vineyard.

We will enjoy a 2 hour experience including a guided tour of the Two Roots Alpaca Farm and presentation. The tour will demonstrate the whole fleece processing procedure and a visit with the alpacas. Learn about their history, husbandry/care and their fiber.

We will meet at Ingles in Weaverville at 9 am to organize carpooling. The tour and presentation will take place from 10:30am-12:30pm.

The possibilities , design and application will create gorgeous patterns, from just a few colors and single design to overlays and multiple patterns. Print note carts, make an Art print ready to hang, or print your own quilt squares or pieces of fabric to sew. You can print journal covers or just have fun experimenting.

Anything Fiber Sale (25 July 2026)

The Anything Fiber Sale is the yard sale for fiber people. We have hanks and cones of unused yarns, piles of unloved fabric, obscure tools that we forgot we had, looms that need a new home, duplicates of knitting needles, fleece that doesn’t seem to get spun. Now it can be yours! We've cleaned out that closet and rented a space to sell our surplus fibers, materials and tools. Yard sale-type goods only! There will be no finished goods unless they are appropriate to use in other fiber techniques (i.e., hand-spun yarns, dyed yardage).

The sale will be at the Conference Center at AB Tech again where there’s air conditioning and parking! There will be plenty of shopping to do. RSVP so we know who to expect to see there!

WHAT TO SELL: The Anything Fiber Sale is a yard sale for fiber people. Teen Sewing Summer Camp (29 July 2026)

Local Cloth is excited to offer a sewing camp for teens! This 3-day camp is geared toward teens 13-18 who feel comfortable with a sewing machine and want to dive deeper into projects of their own. Students will be invited to bring in thrift store items or their own project materials to work on with guidance from the instructor, along with the opportunity of a guided group project!

Each monthly gathering will provide opportunities to refresh foundational techniques, participate in stitchalong projects, and discover the artistry behind sashiko and boro through profiles of notable makers and exhibits. Whether you are new to these practices or a seasoned stitcher, the group will foster skill-building, creativity, and appreciation for the cultural heritage woven into every stitch.

Beyond technique, the group will highlight current trends and innovations in the sashiko world, from new tools and products to contemporary interpretations of traditional practices. The Sashiko and Boro Interest Group at Local Cloth Fiber Studio in Asheville offers a welcoming space for fiber enthusiasts to explore and celebrate the rich traditions of Japanese hand-stitching. Each monthly gathering will provide opportunities to refresh foundational techniques, participate in stitchalong projects, and discover the artistry behind sashiko and boro through profiles of notable makers and exhibits. Whether you are new to these practices or a seasoned stitcher, the group will foster skill-building, creativity, and appreciation for the cultural heritage woven into every stitch.

Beyond technique, the group will highlight current trends and innovations in the sashiko world, from new tools and products to contemporary interpretations of traditional practices. Members will enjoy lively discussions, hands-on exploration, and a supportive community that values both the meditative process and the expressive potential of rhythmic stitching. Together, we’ll cultivate inspiration, share resources, and deepen our connection to this timeless craft in a collaborative and engaging environment.

After a long day at work, how about a little creative time with friends mid-week? This is not a class - you should know how to stitch, crochet, knit, or practice your favorite fiber craft but we suspect you will learn something along the way. We have experienced fiber enthusiasts in our group, so you can count on getting and giving some advice.

Materials supplied by participants: Please bring whatever project/s you are working on, items for show and tell as well as yarn or fiber-y acquisitions and new project ideas. Bring your own supper or snack.

Skill level: All skill levels are welcome, but some basic knowledge of fiber arts is encouraged.

Knitters! Crocheters! Needlefelters! Let's get together with your needles or hooks and make stuff. This is not a class- you should know something about your chosen craft but my suspicion is that you will learn something along the way. Knitters, needlefelters and crocheters are just like that. We do have some experienced folks in our group so you can count on getting some advice too.
