Tapestry 2.0 (06 November 2026)

This class is designed for students who know how to warp a loom and understand some basic techniques of weaving tapestry, meet and separate, hatching, as well as weaving geometric and curved shapes. If you have taken Betty's Beginning Tapestry weaving class you should have these skills. In this 3 day class we will review the above techniques as well as adding some new ones as you weave a small cartoon of your own design. Day 1 will be spent refining your image into a weaveable cartoon. Please bring any photos, sketches, or paintings you have and want to weave. This is not a design class, please have your design ideas worked out prior to class. You will warp your loom and start weaving once the cartoon is finalized. Day 2 and 3 you will weave your image. We will discuss finishing and ways to present your piece after cutting your piece off the loom on day 3.

Let's Wet Felt a Vase or Field of Flowers (09 November 2026)

In this workshop you will learn how to turn wool into fabric by wet felting. You will learn the classic layout and technique for wet felting. We will all make a colorful vase of flowers or a field of flowers if you wish. When it is completed, it will be ready to hang or frame or embellish a jacket or a bag. Approx. finished size will be 6 x 9". Some of you may want to enhance your finished piece by adding needle felted details or embroidery to your design.

Mindful Bookmaking: Slow Making as a Form of Resistance (10 November 2026)

Join us for a special day of bookmaking and reflection on the making process. We will be making an easy but versatile book structure called an accordion or leporello. This is a very simple book to make that does not require sewing but it is very easy to adapt and the fun is putting together the contents of the book. Unlike a traditional book, the accordion pages can be opened out which allows the viewer to see the contents in a continuous way, creating a visual story. It can also be “read” like a traditional book, turning the pages one by one.

We will learn the basic structure of the book and the contents will be up to each person. You can fill your book with anything that is two dimensional: photographs, collage, drawing, painting, doodles, writing, fabric, embroidery…the possibilities are endless.

Along with learning how to make this book, there will be a portion of the class dedicated to sharing about the making experience. As part of her Masters thesis about the experiences of book binding students as we learn and create in community. Rachel will be leading us in a reflection at the end of the workshop. This optional reflection process will be geared toward identifying how the slow process of creating books by hand might be a way to resist the pressure of a world that is increasingly fast-paced, digital, and often more focused on quantity and profit than quality and meaning. Rachel will lead the group in a discussion which explores the meanings that develop through the objects created in group making processes to support her research.

Needle Felt an "Ugly" Christmas Sweater (12 November 2026)

Make your own ugly Christmas sweater with felting! Using wool roving and barbed needles, you’ll be creating your own festive masterpiece on a knit sweater to wear to your next holiday party. This technique can also be used to repair holes or cover stains, and bring life to an old sweater! If you bring your own sweater, make sure it’s knit and preferably not too thin. Very thin sweaters (think closer to t-shirt material) may develop holes or felted on. If you don't have a sweater, you can felt on a scarf, pants, anything you'd like a Christmas tree on!

Dabbling in Acid Dyes: Two Skeins, Two Techniques (13 November 2026)

Curious about dyeing your own yarn? Dabbling in Acid Dyes is a playful, hands-on introduction to using acid dyes on wool yarn.

Students will explore the basic principles of acid dyeing, including safe dye handling, preparing yarn, working with color, applying heat and acid, and properly finishing hand-dyed yarn.

Working with two full 100-gram skeins, students will create two distinctly different colorways: one multicolor skein and one dimensional solid. Along the way, we’ll explore intentional color placement, how colors interact, and techniques for creating depth and variation rather than perfectly uniform color.

Students will leave with 200 grams of their own hand-dyed yarn, two approachable dyeing techniques, and the foundational knowledge to continue experimenting with acid dyes at home.

No previous dyeing experience is necessary. Come ready to experiment, get a little colorful, and see what happens when yarn meets dye!

In this class we will use traditional bookmaking techniques to make a collection of small books. These books are diminutive but still function like their larger sisters. Aside from their traditional use you can also use them as jewelry, quick creative projects, accent pieces and perfect small gifts for the winter holidays or to create a library of various book binding techniques. Knitting Sweaters that Fit Perfectly (05 December 2026)

In this class, we'll discuss everything that goes into knitting a sweater that fits you perfectly! We'll start by exploring what makes a "perfectly fitting" sweater for you personally. Then, we'll discuss ways to find knitting patterns that meet your criteria. Finally, we'll go over how to modify patterns to improve the fit further for your body and personal preferences. Participants are encouraged to bring 3-5 handmade or store bought garments that they like the fit of for reference, as well as a tape measure for garment and body measurements.

Exploring E-Spinning: Afternoon Section (12 December 2026)

Curious about electric spinning wheels but not sure where to begin? Exploring E-Spinning offers a hands-on introduction to e-spinning in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Students will learn the basic mechanics of electric spinning, explore how e-spinners differ from traditional treadle wheels, and gain practical experience with several different machines. Each student will have an e-spinner to work with and will rotate among the available models, allowing plenty of time to experience differences in controls, tension systems, ergonomics, and overall spinning style.

We’ll cover basic setup and operation, fiber preparation, drafting, adjusting speed and take-up, and troubleshooting common beginner challenges. No previous spinning experience is required.

This workshop is ideal for anyone curious about e-spinning, interested in adding an electric spinner to their fiber practice, or simply wanting the opportunity to try several machines before investing in one of their own.

Dyeing with Local Mushrooms (13 December 2026)

In this workshop, we will be learning about some of the local dye mushrooms and lichens of Western North Carolina. The first part of the workshop will be dedicated to foraging, mushroom ID, and natural dyeing basics. In the second part of the workshop, we will actually get the chance to dye some fabric with local mushrooms and lichens!

Little Felt Christmas Ornaments (18 December 2026)

Come and make some little felt ornaments with us. These will be cut out of Merino wool felt and hand sewed (or glued) applique style. I will bring 6 different patterns - garden birds, kitten, penguin, gnome, ginger bread man, and humming bird. You should have time to assemble at least 2 during the class period. As always there will be supplies to take home. Some of you also may want to embellish your ornament with sequins, beads or embroidery. We will not have time for that in class, but I will bring some ideas.

Precision in Sashiko: Corners, Curves, and Intersections (19 December 2026)

Designed for stitchers who have mastered basic sashiko, this six-hour workshop focuses on the small decisions that give complex patterns a polished, intentional appearance. Through demonstrations and guided practice, participants will learn how to plan stitch placement and maintain rhythm when approaching sharp turns, 90-degree corners, tight curves, intersections, and T-junctions. We will explore strategies for avoiding crowded corners, overlapping stitches, awkward gaps, and heavy-looking intersections while preserving the characteristic balance of stitched and unstitched space.

Participants will apply these techniques in two focused exercises. First, they will stitch *tsuzuki yamagata* (continuous mountain peaks), using its angular, connected lines to practice sharp turns, corners, and orderly intersections. A second exercise featuring *seigaiha* (overlapping ocean waves) will develop control around tight, repeated curves and closely spaced meeting points. Along the way, students will practice reading the path of a pattern, deciding where stitches should begin and end, and making adjustments without disrupting the overall design. Participants should arrive comfortable with basic sashiko tools, running stitch, and stitching from a marked pattern.

Weaving Outside of the Box (09 January 2027)

What if a loom didn’t have to look like a loom?

Weaving Outside of the Box is an invitation to explore weaving beyond the rectangle—using branches, hoops, circles, found objects, and unexpected structures as the foundation for creating with fiber.

We’ll experiment with branch weaving, circular weaving, and weaving on objects that were never intended to become looms, discovering how shape, texture, tension, and material can change the way we approach the weaving process.

Rather than following one perfect pattern, this class is about curiosity and possibility. What can become a loom? What happens when the structure itself becomes part of the artwork? What fibers, natural materials, scraps, strings, sticks, or other treasures are asking to be included?

You’ll learn simple techniques for creating and maintaining a workable warp on unusual forms, adding texture and dimension, and adapting basic weaving skills to whatever structure is in front of you.

Come prepared to play, experiment, and look at the world around you a little differently.

Because once you stop assuming a loom has to be square, almost anything can become a place to weave.

This is an advanced beginner class. All that is required to attend is that you know the difference between a warp and weft and that the initial weave motion goes up and down.

Introduction to Sashiko, a Japanese Stitching Practice (10 January 2027)

This introductory class provides an overview of Sashiko, the Japanese stitching and mending practice. Through both structured demonstrations and individual stitching guidance, beginners gain basic skills and knowledge to apply this practice to both functional and decorative goods. Participants will explore the historical and geographic origins of Sashiko and also gain hands on experience stitching with Japanese needles, threads, and palm thimbles. This class is a prerequisite to the other classes in the series. After three practices exercises designed to cover basic skills, participants will gain confidence by stitching a preprinted Sashiko textile project that can be finished at home.

Introduction to Natural Dyeing (15 January 2027)

If you have been interested in natural dyeing but are overwhelmed by all the terminology, preparation and techniques this class is for you. Learn all about natural dyes, mordants, pH, how to prepare your fiber for dyeing as well as how the indigo vat works. Hooked on Coins is a rug hooking class designed especially for absolute beginners although the well seasoned rug hooker would also enjoy this one day class. Using a classic coin motif—a traditional and forgiving design—you’ll learn foundational rug hooking techniques and build confidence as you work. Together we’ll explore basic skills like getting started, pulling loops, shaping simple forms, and finishing. By the end of the class, you’ll have a finished trivet sized perfectly for your favorite mug (a cozy little coaster you actually get to use).

Comprehensive Natural Dye Series (22 January 2027)

Take a deep dive into Natural Dyeing on cellulose and protein fibers. Learn to successfully use natural dyes to produce clear, long lasting colors on a variety of fibers. You will learn the important steps of fiber preparation: scouring and mordanting that is so important in achieving good results with natural dyes. We will the extract our dyes from the raw plant materials, dye the fibers and finally explore post dye modification and over dyeing which extends the range of hues from our primary colors. We will make 12 different dye baths to get a rainbow of colors.

This series requires some knowledge of the chemistry of natural dyeing. If you are a beginner please take the Introduction to Natural Dyeing offered the week before this class. We will provide all the materials, dyes, adjuncts and equipment as well as a detailed handout.

Patternmaking for Apparel: Open Workshop (05 February 2027)

This workshop is for anyone who is looking to expand their knowledge/skills in apparel patternmaking. If you’re already sewing garments using purchased patterns or ones you have drafted yourself but are looking to make edits, tackle fit issues or create something new from your existing pattern, this class will offer you guidance with correcting and manipulating the pattern alongside cutting and sewing muslins to test your pattern. We will review your project or projects (depending on time and scope), make a plan and work one on one to achieve your desired outcome.

Introduction to Marbling (03 April 2027)

Experience the magic of marbling! Marbling is the art of floating paint on thickened water, manipulating it to create patterns, and printing unique designs. We will print on both paper and fabric, creating many pieces for you to enjoy as is or to incorporate into other art projects.
